The aim of the course

The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the methodology of scientific research work in technical – technological sciences and training for writing and publishing scientific research papers, as well as for writing proposals for scientific research projects.


Outcome of the course

Students are trained to independently plan and implement a wide range of research in the field of technical and technological sciences, with a focus on computer science and information technology.


Course content

The concept of science, methodology, scientific methods and scientific knowledge. Relationship between science and scientific research methodology. Stages of scientific research. Design and implementation of scientific research. Methodology and methods of scientific research in technical and technological sciences. Analysis of current scientific research areas in technical and technological sciences, with a focus on computer science and information technology. The role of information technology and e-business in interdisciplinary research.

Planning and implementation of scientific research. Critical analysis of literature in the field of scientific interest of students and the choice of research topic. Research design. Planning and implementation of experiments. Selection of appropriate methodology, methods and procedures.

Development of infrastructure for research realization. Setting up an experiment. Development of IT infrastructure, computer and software support for the realization of the experiment. Setting up an infrastructure in a cloud environment. Development of testbeds. Prototype development and evaluation. Development of mechanisms for data collection and analysis. Conducting an experiment in a real or simulation environment. Concepts and role of computer simulation, 3D modeling and virtual reality in scientific research experiments. Monitoring and supervising experiments. Data collection and storage in appropriate databases. Big data database. Storage of unstructured and multimedia data. Integration of data from different sources, transformations and preparation for analysis. Application of quantitative and qualitative methods for analysis of results. Analysis of results and conclusion. Visualization of results and development of interactive reports. Critical analysis of professional and scientific contributions.

Structure of scientific work and research report. Methodology of writing research papers in the field of technical and technological sciences. Types of scientific papers: review paper, research paper. Publishing and presenting results at scientific conferences and conferences. Publication of results in leading international journals with a focus on impact factor journals on the SCI list. Technical preparation of the paper for submission to the journal. Citation standards. Communication with editors

and reviewers. Analysis of the outcome of the review, corrections according to the requirements of the review and writing answers.

Scientific research projects. Research project structure. Types of research projects: development, innovation, commercial. Preparation of research project proposals in accordance with national and international practice and standards. Management of scientific research projects. Preparation of project documentation.

Tools to support scientific research. Cobson service. Digital libraries. Mendeley. One Note. Publish or Perish. Google Scholar. Scopus. Web of Science. Publons. Communication and collaboration tools.

An overview of open research areas in IT and e-business. A review of the most influential magazines. Analysis of frequent mistakes in all phases of scientific research.
